Good news for mothers! According to researchers, a mother’s genes determine how intelligent or clever their children are, saying father’s genes don’t make any difference.
Scientists argue that genes for cleverness are carried on to the X chromosome, and have huge chances of getting disabled when it comes from the father.
Still can’t believe it? Here are some facts that prove intelligence comes from your mom, according to scientists:
This is because the intelligence genes are carried on the X chromosome. FACT: Women have two X chromosomes, while men only have one. So, do the math.
This category of genes called conditioned genes may only work if they come from the mother. Though in some cases, it may also come from the father. Intelligence is among the conditioned genes.
Studies among genetically-modified mice show that those with more maternal genes have bigger heads and brains, while those who had an extra dose of paternal genes have smaller heads and brains.
Scientists have identified cells that contain maternal or paternal genes in six different parts of the mouse brain. These parts of the brain are responsible for different cognitive functions such as eating habits and memory.
The limbic system is involved in functions such as sex, food, and aggression. Scientists did not find any paternal cells in the cerebral cortex, which is responsible for cognitive functions like reasoning, thought, language and planning.
Researchers in Glasgow have actually proven the earlier research using mice. They interviewed 12,686 young people between the ages of 14 and 22 every year from 1994. Taking into account several factors such as education, race and socio-economic status, they found out that moms IQ actually is the basis of their child’s intelligence.
It is true that genetics is not the only factor in determining intelligence. About 40-60% of intelligence is largely dependent on the environment. Of course, mothers play a huge role in honing their children’s minds.
Studies by researchers at the University of Washington suggest that a secure bond between mother and child is intimately tied to intelligence.
After studying the hippocampus (an area of the brain associated with memory, learning and stress response), they found out that an emotional bond between a mother and child is crucial for the growth of some parts of the brain. They analyzed a group of mothers related to their children for seven years. The researchers found children who were supported emotionally and had their intellectual needs fulfilled had a 10% larger hippocampus than mothers who were emotionally distant.
The sense of security is developed through a strong bond with the mother. This allows them to explore the world and gives them the confidence to solve problems. Studies show that devoted, attentive mothers tend to help children solve problems, further helping them to reach their potential.
Dads, don’t worry. You are also a big part of nurturing your child. Studies show that other genes determined traits such as intuition and emotions are inherited from the father. These traits are also helpful in unlocking potential intelligence.
