We are a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Cardiff. Many elements of the education provided here have been identified as excellent, outstanding and sector leading. Pupils at our school make rapid rates of progress. St. Mary’s is a Learning Power school that is dedicated to developing academic and moral virtues amongst everyone at the school. If, having surfed the site, you would like more information about our work, please do get in touch with us at the school.

Here are some key facts about our school that you may find of interest.

  • All of the teaching here is at least good and much of it is excellent.
  • Children here make rapid rates of progress.
  • The quality of the Catholic life of the school is high.  Our pupils’ well-being: physical, emotional and spiritual is our top priority.
  • We don’t just concentrate on helping children to know lots of ‘stuff’; we also work hard to ensure that they learn how to learn so that they can become skilful, independent learners.  We call this ‘Building Learning Power’.
  • We have plans in place that are designed to help us to continually improve.  We never stand still!
  • There is a wide range of extra-curricular clubs available: chess, cross-stitch, netball, rugby, coding, athletics, reading and entrepreneurship for example.
  • A free Breakfast Club runs from 8.10am every morning.
  • An after school ‘Sunbeam Club’ runs daily from 3.15 – 5pm to help working parents with childcare.  This is a fee paying service.
  • A committed group form an active PTA.  We are always looking out for new members!

We have worked hard to develop a curriculum for our children to enjoy after reading lots of research from around the world. We teach through a series of domains, for which we have identified the vocabulary and knowledge that our pupils need to acquire as they learn. The current pattern of domains is shown here. It will evolve as time goes on as we regularly review and edit the curriculum. Read our Teaching and Learning Policy for more details about our philosophy.

Over the next academic year, the Eco Committee have set a number of challenging targets for us to achieve in order to retain our platinum Eco Schools status. By meeting these targets, we are being kind to the environment and creating an ethos of lifelong sustainability for our school and surrounding area. Below is the action plan for the current academic year. As you can see, we have already achieved a number of our targets!
