Public Holidays in Vietnam are observed in accordance with the different religious and cultural holidays in the country. As per Article 115 of the Labor Code (2012), employees in Vietnam are entitled to a total of 10 paid holidays every year.
For foreign workers in Vietnam, they will receive an additional day off for their country’s National Day. During public holidays in Vietnam, banks, offices, schools and other governmental institutions are close. Most Vietnamese head back to their hometowns during the holidays,

New Year’s Day
The first day of the Gregorian Calendar (January 1) is a public holiday in Vietnam.
Tet Eve / Tet Holiday / Tet Nguyen Dan
Tết or most commonly known as the Vietnamese New Year. Tết is the most important celebration in Vietnam. It is also called the “Feast of the First Morning of the First Day” or Tết Nguyên Đán.
Vietnamese people start their celebrations by cooking food and cleaning the house. Some of the famous cuisines Vietnamese cook during Tết are bánh chưng, bánh dày, dried young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò, and sticky rice. Families usually visit each other’s houses and perform ancestor worship. Some practices include giving money to old people.
The holiday is divided into three parts: the Tất Niên (penultimate New Year’s Eve), Giao Thừa (New Year’s Eve), and Tân Niên (the New Year). The Tet eve consists of preparation before the holiday. The holiday is usually observed for one week in the month of February.
Hung Kings Temple Festival
The Hung Kings Festival is celebrated on the10th Day in the third lunar month. This festival is held in honor of the Hung Kings. A procession led by government leaders at the foot of the mountain is done to start the celebration. This is followed by offering prayers and incense to ancestors.
Reunification Day
Reunification Day or Victory Day marks the anniversary of liberating the South. This is considered a public holiday in Vietnam when the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon on April 30, 1975.
This holiday also marks the end of the Vietnam War, which later formed the Republic of Vietnam.
International Labor Day
International Workers Day or Labor Day in Vietnam is celebrated on May 1. This holiday is the first day after the reunification day, which is often tied together as extended holidays in Vietnam.
National Day
National Day is celebrated annually on September 2 in Vietnam. On this day, Vietnam remembers President Hồ Chí Minh’s declaration of independence in Hanoi on September 2, 1945.
