Our brand new 40 room boarding hostel, Queen Margaret House, is for Year 7 – 13 students. Queen Margaret College is the only girls’ school in Wellington to offer such accommodation to its students. The hostel accommodates both our international students and our domestic students outside of Wellington.

Queen Margaret College has a wonderful, rich history in Wellington and boarding is an integral part of that. The College was originally founded in 1919 as a day school with a small number of girls boarding. In 1950, the Board decided to close the hostel as boarding had gone out of favour at that time. Today the situation is quite different, as demonstrated by the strong demand from international and domestic students for boarding at similar independent schools in New Zealand.

Queen Margaret House offers its students a well-supported learning environment, while also giving them the opportunity to establish life-long friendships. Our staff will make every effort to ensure the girls feel safe, welcome and supported in their academic studies and extra-curricular pursuits.

Queen Margaret College is an IB World School offering a dual qualification pathway of either the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) or NCEA. We have a reputation for outstanding academic results. Our students have numerous opportunities for involvement, high-level performances and leadership through sporting and cultural activities.

We encourage you to explore our website to discover what Queen Margaret House and Queen Margaret College can offer your family.

Queen Margaret House boarders live comfortably and securely in a structured environment, which is warm, friendly and has superb academic support.

A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES

Your daughter will gain a number of important life skills such as independence, maturity and organisation at Queen Margaret House. Outside of the classroom, she will have many sports and performing arts opportunities. Your daughter will also enjoy community events such as shows, movies and activities exploring Wellington, our vibrant capital city.

The College is located in Thorndon, which is conveniently close to parliament, embassies, the city centre and Wellington International Airport.

WORLD CLASS FACILITIES

Queen Margaret House is located within the grounds of Queen Margaret College. The boarding house is purpose built with 40 single bedrooms and recreational areas including access to the College facilities such as the gymnasium, fitness and music practice rooms.

SEVEN DAY BOARDING

We offer seven day boarding during term time and homestays are available for those who cannot go home during the holidays.

The onsite staff will care for the boarders. A family atmosphere is fostered in this extended family environment and we encourage regular contact with family members.

Boarders will receive nutritious meals, good living conditions and support for learning. Girls are encouraged to take part in a variety of recreational activities.

WHY CHOOSE BOARDING?

Boarding gives girls confidence and independence. It helps with self-sufficiency and self-motivation. By boarding at Queen Margaret House, we believe your daughter will form life-long friendships but also succeed academically.

The wide range of experiences available to our boarders help ensure they are well-rounded contributors to society. Sharing living space with students of the same age but often very different backgrounds will challenge the girls’ ability to be sensitive and tolerant towards their peers while learning to respect differences and take pride in their own uniqueness. It is in this environment that students can develop leadership skills and responsibility.
