At ISSH, we believe our role is to support our boarding students, not only with their academic studies, but in becoming independent and self sufficient adults. Students are given freedom to explore and develop in a safe environment, whilst completing their studies at school.

Boarding Programme
The age limitation to 15-19 year old students allows us to genuinely target the development of independence in our boarders. The students have clearly defined boundaries for behaviour, but are expected to develop skills of self-management and take responsibility for themselves, their environment and community.

Our newly refurbished building is located centrally in Schaffhausen. An Off-campus boarding facility allows students to live a boarding life, which is not exclusively focused around the school campus. In the new facility the girls’ rooms are on the third floor, the common rooms are in the middle and the boys’ rooms are on the first floor. The boarders also have their own little garden. They join local clubs and are actively involved in extra-curricular activities.

It is our goal to develop the boarders into responsible members of a global community who freely contribute their strengths and talents. Our students learn to engage successfully with the day-to-day residential life and with the requirements of the DP programme through a structured system of guided instruction leading to increasing independence and a sense of duty. Schaffhausen is the ideal environment for developing independence and self-management. The students don’t live behind boarding school walls but they live in apartments near the town centre. They travel between home and school by school bus. They spend the evenings and weekends with their peers under the care of experienced boarding staff.

Host Family Programme - Boarding For Younger Students
Younger Students (age 12-15) participate in the Host Family Programme. They live in carefully chosen Swiss or International Families and join the International School of Schaffhausen as a day student. Many of our host families have children at ISSH or are former ISSH families. We also have a circle of Swiss families who enjoy welcoming international students into their homes. The host family programme is a great opportunity to develop first steps in independence as the host families provide our student with a family home away from home.

Our host families live in Schaffhausen or the nearer environment. The school’s host family coordinator monitors the well-being of our host families students closely and ensures that the student’s natural family and the host family are in regular contact.

A La Carte - Boarding Tailor-made
Within this programme offering families can choose the length of stay, the form of accommodation and the educational programme for their child.

The length of stay can be adapted to the individual needs and can be anything between 2 weeks, a few months or a full year. Students can either live in the boarding house (age 15-19) or in selected host families (from 12 years old).

The programme can be tailored to include a focus on Languages or Science or Sports.

Clubs at issh
Students are strongly encouraged to join clubs or societies offered within school or in the local community. Schaffhausen is a small town but has everything on offer which one expects to find in a bigger city. These will be discussed with the head of boarding at the beginning of the year.
