Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Dalia Hanno, Senior Tutor at the National Design Academy (Dubai), to discuss her vision for the university’s future, its approach to digital learning, and strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.
The vision at the National Design Academy is to be the leading education hub, offering UK accredited qualifications to aspiring interior and garden designers around the world. The academy has over 35 years of specialised experience in design education from the UK, so we bring a strong foundation of expertise and focus to everything we do.
As a senior tutor based in the Dubai studio, my goal is to continue building a dynamic learning environment that nurtures regional design talent. Our Dubai branch has grown steadily over the past decade, and it will play a greater role in supporting the region’s growing demand for qualified design professionals. We will continue to offer on-campus learning experiences while remaining flexible for students who benefit from online formats.
We offer a variety of course levels and learning formats – whether online or in studio – to suit different backgrounds, time zones, and career paths. The academy has been at the forefront of online learning for a long time, offering UK-accredited education that’s accessible from anywhere in the world. Some of our online courses now offer the option of live lessons on Zoom for a more interactive learning experience and to strengthen the sense of community among students. In Dubai, we’ve embraced a blended learning approach, offering studio classes alongside our online platform.
Dubai is a truly international city, and our student body reflects that diversity. The academy makes UK education accessible to students around the world, providing a supportive learning environment and flexible learning paths for students from all backgrounds and experiences.
As a design institution, we teach our students that design is not just about aesthetics – it’s a tool for impact. Sustainability and wellbeing are key considerations within our curriculum, from responsible material choices to creating healthier environments.
We work closely with leading design firms to bridge the gap between education and employment by organising regular guest lectures and coordinating internships where possible. Many of our tutors, myself included, are industry professionals, which brings practical knowledge into the classroom.
We’re very focused on creating a positive, collaborative environment, both online and in our Dubai studio. Every student is assigned a dedicated tutor who serves as their consistent point of contact throughout the course, ensuring regular communication and academic guidance. We also have a support team available to help, and our online community gives students around the world a space to connect and support each other.
Teaching in our Dubai studio is a rewarding experience. It’s a chance to work with passionate learners in one of the most design-forward regions in the world, while delivering UK-accredited education. As tutors, we stay connected to the design industry, which keeps the teaching current and relevant.
We love seeing our graduates succeed – and we often invite them back to share their journeys with our students. These sessions are always inspiring and help students see what’s possible, especially when they’re just starting out.
It would have to be our academy’s catchphrase – ‘Design Your Future’ – because it’s about helping people take that first step into the world of design, no matter where they’re coming from. We believe it’s never too late to start, and we’re here to support everyone who takes that step.
