The education system in New Zealand is a three-tier model that includes primary and intermediate schools, secondary schools and tertiary education. The academic year generally begins in early February and ends mid-December.

What is the average salary for teachers in New Zealand?

Primary teachers who teach at primary or intermediate schools can expect salaries ranging from $48,000 to $80,000 (NZ) annually depending on the years of experience. Secondary school teachers with two to five years of experience can see salaries ranging from $58,000 to $71,000 while those with more than five years can expect $71,000 to $80,000.

Salaries for university lecturers and professors vary depending on the position. Assistant lecturers will earn between NZ$43,000 and NZ$77,000 a year, while lecturers will usually earn between $70,000 and $100,000. Senior lecturers will see salaries starting at $88,000, while salaries start at $116,000 for associate professors and $135,000 for full-time professors.

Qualifications for teaching in New Zealand

Teachers looking to work in New Zealand are required to have a Bachelor’s degree and a form of tertiary degree to even be considered for teaching positions. They will need to have their qualifications assessed by the NZQA and gain registration through the Education Council of Aotearoa in New Zealand.
